John R. Hooven

Biography

John Hooven is a May 2020 graduate of Georgia State University College of Law. Prior to joining Rutherford & Christie as an attorney, John worked full-time as a paralegal at the firm, while balancing a full class schedule and extracurricular activities. During that time, John gained invaluable insight into the discovery process and case development.

John attended law school at Georgia State University College of Law, where he was the 2017 recipient of the Ben and Stella Johnson Merit Scholarship. In his second year, John received the Harris Lowry Manton LLP Civil Justice Scholarship by authoring the winning essay on “The Importance of Jury Trials,” which was chosen out of a pool of national contestants. John served on the Moot Court Board, a co-curricular activity where students participate in simulated court or arbitration proceedings involving drafting briefs and participating in oral argument, as Vice President of Records and competed on the Moot Court Team. He also competed with Georgia State University College of Law’s highly esteemed Student Trial Lawyers Association (Mock Trial). As a first-year student, John won the inaugural Opening and Closing Competition, which secured his spot on STLA as an attorney. Also, as a first-year, the Moot Court Board named John “Best Oralist” out of almost 50 GSU students.

John further developed his litigation skills while serving as a paid intern at the Douglasville District Attorney’s Office in 2019, where he handled two Grand Jury presentations, two guilty pleas and two probable cause hearings. Apart from these honors and balancing a full-time legal job at Rutherford & Christie LLP, John was one of twelve students chosen to be a Pupil in the Bleckley Inn of Court, a prestigious organization dedicated to improving the quality and professionalism of trial practice in Georgia.
